Spotted Harrier

This would have to be my favourite Australian bird of prey. Here, an adult is hunting low over tall grass fields, looking for quail and rabbit. As it spots something of interest, it can turn 180 degrees in a split second. This shot just managed to capture the middle of the turn.

Canon 1DMkIII, 500/4 + 1.4x, HH, ISO800, f/9, 1/1250th, manual mode, about 80% of full frame. Check out the larger version.

This is an awesome flight capture Akos. The large version is a pleasure to view. Excellent details in the bird, a very pleasing composition too.

Great Shot :toast:

Wonderful banking pose showing off the topside wings and tail here Akos. If it held up cropped that much it would make a great vertical too. Great to see you posting here again. :toast:

Wonderful flight pose and I like how it shows off the colorful feather pattern. I also think this would make a good vertical image as well, way to go.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging feedback.
I totally agree with the vertical presentation and did also feel it best. It, unfortunately, results in far too big a crop for my taste, except for web. Understandably it would have been very difficult to capture the RAW image in the vertical format. Mostly, the flight was level, which also makes for easier panning holding the camera in the conventional landscape format.
