Birds of a Feather

A few weeks ago the ocean was rather rough and the sky made for some dramatic lighting. Photographing with a telephoto and utilizing the huge flock of gulls seemed like the right thing to do. I also took some photos with my wide angle lens but it does not have nearly the dramatic feel.

Nikon D7100 300mm f4 + 1.7X TC HH
f/16
1/1600s
ISO 500

Full frame, minor cloning of errant birds (or wings). Processed in LR5 and CS5

Lots of drama and overall action with the rising sea & swirling gulls too, Luke. I'd say the telephoto worked just fine for the capture also.

The perfect storm vibe going on here,Luke. I like the compression of the telephoto and the gulls really add to mood.

Fantastic, Luke! The light and the spray here seems to make the waves look kind of like mountains. That light adds some nice color, too; even so, I wonder how this would look in B&W with a little more contrast. Yes, certainly "the right thing to do!"

Luke, From the thumbnail I thought this was land. It was a neat surprise when I clicked on it. The light, mist and golden tones look great. Nice work on this! :toast:

Beautifully done, Luke. The combination of warm light, ocean waves and flying gulls make for a wonderful combination.

This is lovely, Luke. The chaos of the birds mimics nicely the chaos of the waves, yet there's the quiet area in the lr and that gentle golden glow.

Drama, scale and sweet light - that's a nice combination.

I like the drama here, Luke. I might consider a pano crop to eliminate some of the softer water that I think detracts from the focus of the subject.

Great shot. I would love to see it with less saturation and perhaps more contrast to enhance subtle effects.
