Kestrel with Vole
by Brian Gatlin
I recently made a trip to the Salt Lake City area with intentions of photographing raptors. Subjects were generally tough to find this year compared to last year, but a single bird made the whole trip worthwhile. I spent a lot of time with this female American Kestrel one afternoon, highlighted by a 20 minute span where I watched her catch a vole, then photographed the entire sequence where she ate it. This shot is the first bite.
Getting to experience and photograph this entire event was probably the coolest single experience I've had in my 5 years of bird photography.

Thanks go to Mia McPherson and Ron Dudley not merely for introducing me to the location where I found this bird, but especially for all the inspiration their photography has given me over the years. They are among the bird photographers whose artistry and skill I aspire to, and I cannot thank them enough for their hospitality, encouragement, and inspiration. Thank you!

Congrats
My youngest son will head to Salt Lake City for spring break (late March and early April) to visit my oldest son and his wife who live there. We will also tour Arches and Zion among a few other spots. Bird photography was not on the to do list, but it is now.
Well done.
Ron & Mia are definitely two of the best.

She is a beauty! Love the great pose, eye contact, the fur in the bill, the details and the sharpness.
It was wonderful to see you again and next time you come up I hope there is far more bird activity. It has been dreadfully slow and there won't be the eagles like there have been in past years because there won't be a carp kill at Farmington Bay due to our eagles dying from WNV.
Hope to see you again soon.
Sandy
A well deserved WP
