Verdin at San Tan Mountain Regional Park -- Queen Creek, Az

1/1000 at f11 and ISO640
Canon 7D
Canon 700mm with 1.4 TC

The green in the background is a cactus -wishing I had taken a couple steps right so that the cactus covered the entire background. Hard bird to get to stand still.

Nice detail and good exposure on this active small bird. I agree about moving a couple steps to get a more uniform background.

Nice detail, Scott and great eye contact. It looks like you were shooting between twigs to get the head clear, so moving might not have been a viable option. If I remember to move in situations like this, I'll usually take a few shots from where I am (a bird in the bush being worth any number that have flown)

Sharp & well exposed Scott.
Good clear view of the head, I like it as it is..
And if wishes were fishes you'd probably have to through them back anyway

I don't mind the setting or branches in this; it's a beautiful bird. For my tastes the image is over-sharpened, with the feathers having a crispy look, esp around the head/eye. Nice bird to capture! I agree with Dennis' comment! Sharon

A very good image of a difficult bird to get. I see them all the time in the desert behind our place but getting a picture is another thing, way to go.

Nice capture of an active, challenging bird. I'd drop a couple of f-stops to try and blur the background a bit.
