Frozen Flow & Repost WC 620

Out for a walk in the woods two years ago and neglected to bring my camera. Found this intimate scene on a small stream and used what I had, my HTC Android phone. Only data I have is focal length of 4.92mm, ISO 144. Just sharpened a little in PSE. I am still intrigued by the patterns, but feel it may be a bit too busy. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome and thanks for viewing.

Great find, Jim. I like the visible layers of ice which gives a feeling of depth to this image. The shard-like shapes are unique, and the smoothness and clearness of the ice is appealing. Great designs and comp you found, which can be tricky with ice. My one thought would be to crop in from the left and down from the top to get rid of the visible rocks. I think it would make your image feel less "busy" and make the ice design the sole focus.

Cropped to eliminate rock on left and top and drawing more attention to the ice. Thanks Carolyn!

I like the crop from the left but wouldn't crop so much from the top, only to the bottom of the rocks, I like that sinewy element at the top. Nicely seen, glad you had the phone camera with you!

Wow - very cool formation Jim  I agree with Scott re the crop - perhaps a little less of the top - but it is definitely effective for drawing more attention to the ice either way :toast:

I really like the expanding lines at the top, and all of the interesting contours in the lower half. Losing the rock on the left in the repost is a big improvement, but as others indicate, I do like a lot of what's up top that goes away in the repost. I think your crop is probably the best result because it keeps that great diagonal stretched oval and that's my favorite part of the whole view. It's fine result from a cell phone.

Repost looks lots better, Jim, but agree with others that maybe less of a crop along the top. Just to below where the ice makes a curved connection to the rock. . .and maybe do a tiny bit more from the left. Picky, picky  Sorry, just trying to be helpful. . .it's hard to always describe where I as a viewer think a crop would work best. But this certainly is an image worth playing with IMO.

As Carolyn points out, conveying exactly how a viewer would improve a photo is still more of an art than a science and is often prone to various interpretations, but, in the end, that can be a good thing because it promotes thoughtful dialogue. Thank you for all the comments.

This is an interesting and beautiful sight no mater what camera you used. A square crop would be even better.

I like the repost, Jim. I think, in the end, we take all suggestions from the point of view of what we saw. Sometimes we fail to see what others might and other times we see what we saw. At any rate I like what you saw.

I'm another for the square crop but this has wonderful shapes and textures in it Jim. Wonderful find no matter what camera you used. Very nice.
