Rise and Fall Again

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted February 5, 2014109 views10 comments
This WC required some digging, because I have quite a few photographs of textures IN the ice and UNDER the surface of smooth ice, but not that many of what is required for this WC: " Photos that depict texture on the surface of ice." (For instance, last night I posted "Grapes of Ice" in the Landscape Gallery, which illustrates textures BELOW the surface.)

This one (reprocessed from last year) does include those surface textures, as well as textures and shapes on the edges of the ice that are formed by rising and falling water levels in a local brook.

PLEASE SEE LARGER VERSION

Canon 5D2; Canon 24-105mm.

Lots to like in this ice image, Wayne! I like the curving contour of the smoothed stream with all the erratic ice/snow shapes along the edges. Those overhanging fingers of ice are amazing! Perfect for the challenge. I did see your "grapes of ice" posting and thought you should submit it for this challenge too. I guess I'm not interpreting the theme quite as strickly as you are. To me, ice texture--whether in, under, or on the ice--is what this theme is about. . .the ice has made the texture.

I won't pick a nit about what "on the surface" means. This is just a darned nice photo! :toast:

Wayne, what a great combination of ice structures, the surface structures that look to be from melting and refreezing and the larger (deeper) structures from the stream either splashing or the water level falling. The stream makes a wonderful leading line and textural foil for exploring the ice.

Suffice to say, on the surface this is excellent (inside, too!).

Wayne, I think this is totally inappropriate for this WC. How in the world could a person present a picture of ice for a challenge that is looking for the texture of ice!!!! This isn't ice, it's a picture of a stream with ice around it. I'd love to see the black and white version of this.

The larger image particularly is great fun to explore. Well-chosen shutter speed too.

Thanks Carolyn. After spending a part of my life writing instruction manuals, rules, regulations, standards and laws, I tend to interpret the language literally. (Saying "I really meant to say..." doesn't get you far in court, so I'm glad you are the judge here. ) But precision in language depends on the point of view of the reader and/or writer. If you are a fish, the textures on the surface of the ice are on the other side, so it's clear that my reading of this WC was too narrow, anyway.

Hey Gary, This was all ice -- some of it just got a little too warm. I like B&W a lot for winter images, but this one had some unusual hues in the ice that I wanted to preserve.

Really nice comp with the water flowing through the image and I love the lacy looking ice cantilevers. My only suggestion might be to brighten/lighten the snow in background as it is looking a bit grey/underexposed.

Very nice all around Wayne, can't add anything that hasn't been said.
