I liked this because of the serious expression. Usually their expression seems more comical.
I'm not particularly happy with the background, rip-rap along the river bank.

Canon 7D
100-400 mm lens at 250 mm
1/200 at f7.1
ISO 100

Thanks for looking. Comments and critiques appreciated. Please see larger image.

Nice image of the Coot, Allen. I like the way the light catches the red eye and the spot at the base of the bill. I agree that the rocks in the bg are an issue. there's something weird going on with them-looks like they're striped for some reason, almost like some kind of digital artifact. I might be tempted to blur and maybe darken them.

Nice Coot , which seems to be well exposed (which is always hard in particular when it comes to the bill - but you did a great job here) ! See Dennis' remarks for the rocks, to me the image seems slightly tilted, some CCW rotation may be an option. Am not sure though . Love your Coots (ours are missing the red dot). :wavey: , Hans

I think you can go F 5.6 with that lens, but not sure it would have helped you much with the bg rocks. You caught just enough of the eye to make this work, and I'm not used to seeing that red dot so prominently on the coot. Sharon

Good work on the coot; never an easy exposure. I'd suggest opening the aperture to 3.5 or so to get the background out of focus. As you note, it's a negative.
