Perseid Meteor Shower

This was my very first attempt at shooting the Perseid Meteor Shower. I set the camera up on a tripod and using Magic Lantern I set an intervalometer for 20 second frames shooting for about two hours. I then ran down the length of the field with a can of starter fluid which I ignited with a cigarette lighter. This gave me the lighting on the charcoal kilns.

I then left the camera and went for coffee. Two hours later when I checked the LCD I discovered I had two meteors in one frame and one meteor in a separate frame. So this image comprises three frames. The meteors angles were not changed, only one meteor was added in to make this balance out and of course I had to add in the initial frame for the lighting on the kilns.

I remember at the time seeing a lot of images on the internet that had been taken of the Perseid Meteor Shower. I had no idea really how to get my shot out there to the masses but I felt i really had got a good shot and on my first try.

Super cook image however I have had to move it to the Man & Nature forum for obvious reasons.

Andrew, I find this shot fasinating. I'd say your experiment was a resounding success. I love the light on the charcoal kilns. The night sky and meteors are just icing on the cake. Super job. :toast:

I love this…your night sky and painted huts creates a wonderful effect. It is as if we are viewing something from an ancient scene. Well done!

Great image. I like the creative light painting on the kilns. You captured the Milky Way beautifully. The vertical alignment of the meteors matches the Milky Way nicely. Did you try correcting the meteor angles for the Earth's motion? Just curious, as I like your results here just as well.

No Graham there was no change of angle for the addition of the meteors. The two left most meteors were in one image, the far right one was from another frame but their angles were not changed whatsoever.

Great image, Andrew. I'm somewhat fascinated and curious about your lighting technique. Do you have any skin left on your arms? Did you actually run around with a burning open can of lighter fluid and not set the canyon on fire as well?! Want to borrow my flashlight? I'm stumped, but a wonderful result nonetheless.

Jeff,

Well it was very cold here that night so I had a warm jacket on, I do remember being blinded by the brightness of the light as I ran through the field, once or twice I stumbled headlong over a clump of grass. I know I could have used a flashlight but I absolutely adore the warm light given off by the aerosol, plus I found the aerosol gave out a much broader expanse of light. In truth I think it's a great tip for night photography, I agree that it's not safe but I felt the grass wasn't going to catch light.

Flat out the best meteor shower image I ever laid my eyes on. Of course the beautiful light on the kilns and their position in the image is spectacular. Although an interesting idea with the fire, I hope other photographers don't try this, particularly on public land in the U.S!
