Trapped

Photo was taken in Langkawi, Malaysia (February 2014). This pink-necked Green Pigeon was trapped in a field on a net. I was tempted to release the bird, however the net belonged to someone and I did not like to go beyond taking a picture on this occasion.

Photo was edited and cropped to enhance the image.

Canon EOS 7D
EF 400mm f/5.6L USM
f/8.0
1/1250
iso 200

Oh my... I'm not sure I could have stopped myself from freeing him. What are the nets there for? To catch birds, or for another reason? If birds... what birds, and for what purpose... research, food? (I'm afraid another one of your images has me asking a lot of questions!)

Despite the difficult subject matter, I do very much like the image. And from an environmental photojournalism standpoint - wow. I can't imagine someone looking at this and not getting the point -- nets trap birds and will lead to their death! I'm just hoping that was not the *point* of these nets!

These birds are not migrating birds. Perhaps the net is used to catch the birds and sell them. I doubt they are for tagging purposes, as they had only one net smaller than the size of a volley ball or badminton net (in length).

I am aware they trap birds in Egypt and eat them for food.

I am not aware if they eat them in Malaysia.

A strong, dramatic image. What is the purpose of the trap?

A powerful image, although sad. I also would have been tempted to free the bird.
Congrats on a fine WP!
