The Northern Saw-whet owl is nocturnal and favours the hugging of the branches close to the stalk during daytime ret period. This guy has very small rough spot , but only visible by viewing the Large Version. Taken mid day in shade and was awake and alert at this time.

Nikon D700 with Nikon lens 70-200 vr F2.8
taken @ 200mm
Shutter speed 1/500 F5 ISO 1000
HandHeld -.67 meter compensation
Full Frame about 95%

Comments and critique appreciated. The Large version shows excellent detail.

not baited or called in

Super capture Bill. Love this little guy. The techs look excellent. The background is very nice also. My only nit is the crop. I think a little more room on the left side would be good if you have it. Congrats on capturing this guy.

Wonderful close up image with nice feather detail in the larger image. Nice job of getting this hand held, way to go.

Nice shot. I would like to get a shot at one of these guys. If it was mine I would crop out the tree on the right even if that made it a little tight.

Great job just finding one of these beauties, much less getting a sweet photo like this. Excellent pose and nice details.

Superb Capture Bill. That you got this with a very small 70-200mm lens is awesome. You must of snuck right up on him. Great details and I love the mushrooms growing on the tree trunk. Excellent exposure. Well done.

Remarkable, Bill. Fine work finding the bird and getting close enough that, in the larger version, I can see your reflection in the bird's eye. I've never seen one these this far out in the open... Very well done.

Super shot and that you made it with a 70-200 is even more amazing. That is one laid back Saw-whet. Great work. :toast:

This little guy was very cooperative while perched here. He is so small and could fit into my hand .

I am fortunate to have a Winter area where the Raptors and some owls winter over . The Island has a farming community and only accessible by Governmentt. Ferry service. A remote special spot that has a Wind Farm proposed to be built here soon.
Thanks for the feedback everyone Really appreciate!:)

Cheers
