Curious Fawn

I am posting this basically just to share a nice shot. I took this at the edge of the woods behind my house back in 2011 with my husband's Canon Powershot SX30 IS fully automatic. This was back before I ever held a DSLR. The first shot I got, one of the ears was framed against it's back and the fawn politely watched and waited as I lowered myself down to frame them against the hillside. I would love to know what kind of shot I would have gotten with a better camera and some more experience. Virtually no post processing other than a retouch of distracting yellow leaves in the background.

Nice capture of this beautiful fawn. I sometimes photograph these guys at the local nature preserve. It is always fun. The color of the fawn looks right. Perhaps the vegetation was indeed this green. However, for me, it overpowers the image. I would desaturate it a bit for artistic reasons. Well done. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Stephanie

Young fawns with their unique colourization is a joy to see. Your choice of positioning here is a difficult capture to make suggestions. The front on view is bright and clear with good details in the head and ear areas.

Hi Stephanie. Nice photo, regardless of the modest gear and your inexperience at the time. This little cutie is really curious about that camera, love the expression and those eyes! You might be able to enhance this in a few ways for maximal emotional and technical impact. Personally, I might warm up the colour balance a little, maybe decrease the exposure slight as well. I just got a new monitor, so must add that I'm not 100% sure I'm seeing colours accurately at my end yet...

Turning the camera sideways to get a vertical orientation might have given you all the legs for a completely different and pleasing effect.

You caught a fine pose and a very intense stare. Yes, a vertical image showing all of the legs would be nice, but the expression here is a winner. When I've taught photo classes, my first statement is always, "The equipment does not make the photo, the photographer does." The challenge is in knowing the limits of the equipment. Having an SLR with interchangeable lenses gives you more opportunities in a wider variety of situations.

Very nice. Makes me anxious to get up to Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park in a few months for the fawns. Thanks for sharing this. Andrew :toast:
