Golden-Tailed Woodpecker

A pair of these woodpeckers were nesting on the grounds of one of the lodges I visited in the Sabi Sands a couple years ago. I liked this scene due to the stained glass look created by the background trees and foliage. Something a bit more colorful and different than a lot of the stuff I've photographed there.

A very nice composition, Max. The bird works very well small in the frame. My only nit is the small oof twig or bark flake diverging from the trunk in the bottom third of the frame-I think I'd remove it if it were mine.

Something different. Love it! I agree with Dennis about the OOF sliver of bark. :toast:

There is something cute about how the bird is popping his head out of the tree, like he's looking to see if you're still there. The bird himself is an unusual species... part of me wants to see what his golden tail looks like! But I do like the pose of the bird here, and the BG colors are over-the-top lovely. Perhaps, and I'm not sure about this, a little more of the tree on the left would have been nice, bringing the bird more into the image a bit, but I do like it a lot as posted.

"the stained glass look" is on the money. Exactly what I thought when I first saw it. :toast:
