red-tailed hawk in flight

Taken with the 300d and Canon 400mm F5.6 L + Tamron 1.4x teleconverter in Los Gatos, CA.

that poor hawk had a broken leg I think..his leg looked really wierd as if he could not bend it. Hope he will be ok. Hope I did not overdone the sharpening..it's hard to judge on my old monitor.

cropped about 20% to 15% for composition.

here is a bigger size file if you want to see something bigger: http://www.pbase.com/zylen/image/38860240

Focal Length 560 mm
Exposure Time 1/2000 sec
Aperture f/8
ISO Equivalent 400
Exposure Bias -2/3

thanks everyone! :) I think I really got lucky on that one with perfect light direction and flight feathers nicely spread! :) I was lucky that the bird did a turn around and came back in my direction, and rotated its body in the right angle.

Wow! Essence of RED-TAILED Hawk!

:toast: :toast:

ADDED: Daniella, I'm guessing the Tamron 1.4 doesn't signal to the camera, and so allows autofocus at f8. If not and you are manually focusing, WOW and congratulations!! If so, it's a pretty nice tribute to the much-maligned 300D (which I also use) that it can focus this well -- admittedly on a large bird against a blue sky, but still...

Tom, it was AF and the 300d AF quite well with taht combo. The Tamron standard 1.4x and 2x teleconverters do not report to the camera so it will still AF with the 2x but only with the horizontal AF points (not the center). I have tried it with the 20d and the 20d does not AF with the 2x teleconverter at all.

I use the 1.4x teleconverter on the 400mm lens a lot and always with AF.

 Wow what a great shot, but I do prefer the un-cropped image it gives the bird slightly more room.

Well done :toast:
