The Quarry WC 632

This historic old quarry is in Halibut Point State Park, just north of the aptly named Rockport, MA. The sun and the wind (or, in the latter case, the lack of it) cooperated to allow for deep blue water and clear reflections. If anyone wants to comment, I'd be grateful to her how you think the composition works, i.e., my inclusion of the foreground.

Nice image, Nancy - lovely deep blues in the water and some delicately wintry tones in the landscape. My only thought about the composition is that it might be good to bring the trees on the rock edge a bit more to prominence, as they are a nice feature - so perhaps just a bit of a crop at the bottom and sides ?

Definitely quiet water here, Nancy. I have to agree with Ian that the featureless rock/dirt in the foreground makes for a little too much dead space. A bottom crop would turn it into a nicer panorama. I also think it could use a little sharpening, especially on the larger version.

Nice layering of the elements in this image, Nancy. The view of the ocean in the background adds an interesting twist to a view of the this quarry, allowing the far edges to appear as an island. I think a bottom crop of about half of the rock foreground would be helpful, and I would also try to tone down the brightness of the rock. An extreme pano crop, eliminating the foreground all together may also work. I like the nice shadings of blue against the more neutral colors of the land elements.

I like the repeated elements, the foreground and the far side of the quarry and the two sets of deep blue water contrasted with the softer blue of the sky. I could see cropping most of the foreground rock as an alternate view.

I like your vision of the alternating "stripes" of colors, tones and textures. The undulating shapes of the lighter stripes match up nicely, showing off an interesting shape to the darker water between them. I wonder if perhaps it might be possible to change your shooting position and cropping to emphasize that aspect, maybe using a longer focal length to compress the scene a bit, and end up with less of the foreground rocks which seem to dominate the scene.

I want to thank profusely everyone who commented on my photo. Your comments are VERY much appreciated since I enjoyed photographing this place and hope to get back there some time. Everyone (including my son, to whom I showed it) was unanimous about cropping the rocks in the foreground, and he also suggested trying a B&W conversion. So, I've just uploaded my new version if you want to check it out. Thank you again!
