Squatters

A pair of Great Horned Owls decided to take over a Great Blue Heron nest this year. The lone chick seems to be entertained by the neighbors. I noticed that one pair of herons in the rookery is on a very small, new nest. I wonder if they are the former residents of this one.

Because of the distance to this nest, none of my owl images from here are NPN quality, so I'm glad I caught this heron flying by, justifying a wider-than-usual shot.

Canon 50D
Canon 100-400 mm. + 1.4X TC
1/1000 sec. @ f/9
Tripod
66% of full frame

Hmmmm. I see the NPN clock is still four hours in the future.

This tells a great story Wayne, cool shot
Great that you've caught the heron flying above, with the owls looking up :toast:

I like how the owls are looking up at the heron. I like your comp and the clouds. The owls look well exposed but the heron looks a touch dark to me. Thanks for sharing this interesting image Wayne. :toast:
