Arches National Park, Utah

This is an old large format 4X5 Tri-X image taken back in 1982 using a red filter to darken the sky. Still can't image how I transported all that camera equipment...... Cambo 4X5, Mamiya 645, and several Olympus OM4's with multiple lens for all. Oh, I forgot a changing bag for 4X5 film and associated holders with a cooler for the film.....

The negative was developed by me back then in my dark room and recently scanned on my Epson V750.

I decided to revisit some of my old southwest images since our youngest son Kevin drove through these same areas this weekend on his way to his summer job with the US Forest Service in Kaibab National Forest, Williams AZ. He is 8 credits away from his Bachelors of Science Degree in Forestry with a minor in Outdoor Education from the University of New Hampshire (and did receive the honor of being a Presidential Scholar on May 16). He also spent the past week camping, hiking, and rock climbing in the Colorado Rockies with a couple of his friends from UNH. Hopefully he took some good pictures with my Canon G1X which I gave him for the trip!

Thanks for having a look. This is an old film image so I know there is a lot of graininess.

Looks like you even had the excellent touch back then Eva using the big gear. Gosh, I've seen a lot Arches takes, but this angle of view or location has me looking to figure out where exactly in the park. Maybe just me right now, but it does look different with regard to the site. Good to see some old Tri-X images making the rounds here also. Nice work.

Glad to hear your son Kevin is doing so well in his field of education too.

Congratulations on your son. Good to see some old film captures. I spent 35 years printing black and white for clients and I do not miss the darkroom.
I never got comfortable with 4x5 and loved shooting 2 1/4.
Thanks for the oldie. :wavey:

The old TriX was a great film! I used a lot of it (4x5) back in the late 70's--early 80's (That's 1970's-1980's Harley ). It had tremendous dynamic range. This image shows that well--there is excellent detail and separation across the board. I like the comp, too.

Happy to hear your son is well on his way, Eva!

**Sometimes, when I tell a story and Harley is around, I'll say, "Back in 70's we..." His usual remark goes something like, " That was the 1870's, everyone!"

But, I digress. Nicely done image, Eva!

I like this a lot, Eva. Have you noticed that the spire on the left resembles a side profile of a male lion? Very cool!!

Hi Eva, I'm really enjoying looking at your large version of this image! You really were doing some excellent work even back then. I too developed quite a bit of Tri X in my darkroom in the 80's.
Congrats to your son as well. Sounds like he is on a good track!

I can't imagine how you toted all that equipment either Eva - it would kill me!! Beautiful image, with a perfect amount of contrast. I love these formations - can you give an idea of scale here - how tall are they?

This is awesome. there have been more BW images lately than usual and I'm really getting into it. The details and clarity are excellent. So far in my journey into monochrome it seems film produces a better image than digital. Is the sky a little darker on the right? I'm viewing on a cheap work monitor so anything is possible. :toast:

Nice grab from the archives. Sounds like you packed the car to the gills for that adventure.

Looks like Thor's hammer in the middle and I do see the lion on the left. The formations are great and the foreground sets them off well.

Best wishes for your son.
