Grand Prismatic's Mist

by Mark Seaver

I often see the colors of Yellowstone's Grand Prismatic Springs in the mists above the pool, but in multiple tries, I had not been able to capture them in an image. In my most recent visit, I managed to succeed but am not sure why...processing, time of day, amount of mist, sun angle are some of the possible influences. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this look into the mist at Grand Prismatic spring. (5D3, 24-70 f2.8 @ 59 mm, f/10, 1/125s, iso 200, tripod)

Really nice Mark and a change from the typical views I've seen. I would love to shoot it from the air, in fact it's my big hope for this year.

This is a nice abstract, Mark. You might consider warming up the mist in the upper part. I like the shapes and color of the travertine and the mist on the left.

This is an extremely interesting view overall, Mark. The composition is very different from this POV and the wild colors seem to add a bit more mystique to the view. The phenomenon taking place that you've captured and pointed out adds to the interesting aspect of the foreboding looking area too.....

Beautiful array of colors from top to bottom. I really like your comp too, Mark. My only suggestion would be to clone out the infrastructure? that's in the background, which isn't really apparent until you see the large view

Terrific colors, I think a crop with more on top and a bit less on the bottom would look nice if you have it.
The more mist the better…..

Hey Navin, thanks, I hadn't noticed the telephone poles back there. Will get right after them! There are also several standing and at least one downed tree back there left over from the 1988 fires, while they may look like telephone poles, I think I'll leave them in. The purchase print version has lost the phone poles.

This is really nice, Mark. I was going to suggest removal of the power pole and structures behind the mist, that Navin pointed out. Beautiful take on a wonderful spot. :toast:

Good use of the contrasting colours. The composition is well isolated from the more standard views of this location I've seen.

Wow, well captured, even if you don't really know why you succeeded this time. Serendipity can be helpful at times! My only nit is the telephone pole in the back. Maybe crop it out? But the colors in the mist are really stunning!

An impressive scene, Mark! I like the comp you came up with here and the combination of colors, mist and textures really work together. Very nicely done!

Incredible colors, Mark, and super textures in the foreground. The rising steam and colors imparts such an off-worldly look but I imagine that is how it feels when walking amongst all these remarkable thermals. Nicely done.
