Lanterman's Mill/Falls (WC 641)

This is Lanterman's Mill, a working grist mill owned by and located within Mill Creek Metroparks, Youngstown. Acquired in 1891 when the Park was created as Ohio's first public park district, it's now on the national register of historic places. I took this film image in 2001. Technically, it's not the first time I photographed the mill, but it's the first photo of the mill that I printed and sold. I have since photographed the mill, which I drive by almost daily and hike by often, at least 25 more times (you can see several of those images in my gallery). The mill is probably my single most photographed subject, and I sell prints and cards of the mill taken in all seasons, but this remains one of the most popular versions. Nikon F5, 17-35, GND.

Edit: It just occurred to me that the mill is not a "natural subject," so maybe this does not qualify for the WC theme, but the falls is a natural subject, and the falls itself, with or without the mill, is "a favorite natural photo subject."

Like the colors in this Scott; there is a nice mix of greenery that offsets the yellows and reds. Then there's the well-timed waterfall and gorgeous sunset so I'm not surprised its a best-seller for you. Plenty of natural elements in the shot to qualify, I would think. This scene reminded me of a well-photographed mill in North Carolina, Maybry's Mill. Probably find a pic on the web. The lower half of the mill seems to be a little off-square, but hey, its still standing!

A very pleasing scene Scott. I like the colors and how you recorded the water. Thanks for sharing.

Idyllic Scott. I think it has enough natural subjects in it to fit the theme. What a great balance of colors and what a great abundance of things to look at. You could see something new each time you look. Very nice.

Easy to see why it would sell a lot of prints/cards Scott. The combination of historic & photographic value makes it a great buy..
Beautiful image for all the aforementioned reasons, me thinks it's right where it belongs in this WC gallery/theme:toast: :toast:
Lets not quibble OK?

Lovely look at the mill and falls, Scott, with a fine mix of fall colors and colorful sky. It's easy to see why this is a best seller. It's also fun to contemplate how we might "fix" this image if it was taken with a modern digital camera and digital processing.

Thanks for the comments. Mark, I certainly agree about a couple issues with this version that digital capture and modern pp could overcome. The same conditions (nice sunset light at the time of peak fall color) have not been repeated in the ensuing years. At the time I took this, I did shoot it in different exposures, and the slides are in a box somewhere, but this image is from a single transparency drum scanned more than a decade ago. I just never put the time and money into scanning multiple versions for blending, but maybe I should. :wavey:
