Crested Owls

I try to visit Corcovado National Park whenever I am in Costa Rica, as I consider it the best place for wildlife in that country. Until last year I had never seen an owl there (night walks are prohibited), but moments after my clients and I got off the boat and waded ashore, we stumbled across this pair right above the trail.

This was a new species for me, so it was a pretty exciting find despite the tough shooting conditions. Shooting straight up with midday light streaming through from behind isn't really my idea of fun, but this shot worked out well enough to document what is a pretty striking bird.

Very interesting owl species. Results are very good for the conditions - I'd never have guessed there was any difficulty just from seeing the results.

Neat bird, Max, and a great job of handling a difficult lighting situation. Neat to have the second owl in the bg.

Nice look at this beautiful owl, Max! And I like the second owl peeking through the branches.
