Cedar Textures

Here's a slightly different crop of my earlier image from this charred Incense Cedar in Yosemite.

I decided to warm it up a bit, which gives it more punch.

Nikon D-7100
18-140mm Nikkor @ 42mm
F-8 @ 1/5s, ISO 100
WB adjustment in ACR
TK's Masks
Cropped from the right
May 2014

Please see the large version. Thanks!

Your comments or critiques a re always appreciated.

Reminds me of a freshly hardened lava floe with molten lava still flowing beneath, visible through the cracks. Nice detail and texture here as usual Preston. You're a master of these bark shots.

Wonderful depth in all the crags on this one, Preston. The only thought for change if possible is the darker area in the ULHC. It's not a big deal but was just a thought. The detail is stunning in the larger version too.

I am not sure about the squarish crop, maybe a bit more of a landscape.
Beautiful texture and the orange highlights add a lot.

I like this a lot, Preston! The textures and detail in your large version are wonderful and I like this comp very much I could see the ulhc just a bit lighter too, but like Paul not a big deal to me either way. Very nice work on this!

Thanks for your comments, gents.

Paul and Nick: I did attempt to lighten that area in the upper left, but the tonality wasn't working for me.

Dan: I had to crop this from the right, as there was an out of focus area there due to the curvature of the tree. The OOF area really bothered me--so it went. Hindsight being 20/20, I could have used f-16 for better DOF.

Love the richness and the fine detail in this Preston. The triangle formed by the knot holes creates interest for me as well.

Loved the previous version and this is no exception. Incredible textures and the golden glints breaking the surface of the bark are superb. Stunning, Preston.

Beautiful PB. I really like the comp, along with the shapes, colors, lines and textures. Good stuff.

Like Joseph, this reminds me of hardened lava flow. The details really come out in the larger version. Nice shot Preston and a subject I would probably have not seen myself. It looks great.

Gary.

I like this a lot, Preston. I think I do prefer the deep reds in the other version, but orange is cool too. Love the detail in this, really sweet.

This version definitely pops, Preston. The bits of orange bark have me thinking of a hot lava flow. The knots are nicely spaced and add extra interest. It's a beauty.

Looks like a 3 eyed monster! I like the square comp and all the texture in the bark, but what really impresses me in this (and all of your work) is that it's not "overdone"; that is, it's fully saturated but not overly so. This reveals the true beauty of nature whereas some images tend to "compensate" for things they consider lacking in Mother Nature. Mother Nature does quite fine on her own, thank you very much, and your images show that.

Excellent texture and detail Preston. From the thumbnail, I too thought lava. Yes you are the master of bark.

I was going to write some really cool stuff, then noticed that Joe (selfishly  ) already had.
