Seal Rock Blues + Repost

Another break from Redwood images. This was taken at Seal Rocks south of Newport on the Oregon coast. The sunset turned out to be a bust mostly, but I hung around for the Blue Hour and was able to catch this peaceful scene...

Love the mood and the comp Joe. On my big Dell I see a touch of halo around the silhouette of the rocks. Easily fixed if you want to. I like the blues and the darkness in this a lot.

Yeah, I do see a little as well Pat. What's the best fix for that?

Nice mood in this one, Joseph. I also like the decision to keep the rock formations silhouetted. If it were mine, I'd probably clone out the contrail in the sky, then crop a bit off both the bottom and top to make it a pano.

Blue Hour indeed! Really nice. I would also probably clone out the contrail even if it isn't one, because it "looks" like one. Still a fantastic image. :toast:

Thanks guys. I was thinking the same thing about the contrail. I'm not sure if it is actually a contrail, but I'll clone it out and repost when I have time...

Joe,

There are two ways to do it that I've used. Both involve zooming in, in Photoshop and using a brush to either clone over the halo or a brush to darken over the halo. I typically use a hard brush at about 5 or less pixels. It's a real nuisance but easy to do. This can happen when you adjust the clarity, the contrast, the highlights, in sharpening or with a luminance adjustment. So far, I haven't had the problem if I used luminosity masks and nothing else to control contrast.

Hope that helps. I'm new to this too although in avian I used to do it routinely around the bird after the final sharpening step.

I like the water texture in the foreground, and the mood of the whole scene... The comp is solid, as well.

I think it is a bit too "blue", but a really nice comp and techs.
Easy to warm it up if you desire....

I love Seal Rocks. Crazy electric Blue Joe, looks nice! I like the pano idea, but would just crop the top.

Thank you all for your feedback. It's useful and constructive as always!

Here's a version that's a little less blue, the halos reduced, the contrail removed, and cropped from the top into a semi pano.

And John, your previous shot from this location is probably the best I've seen!

Yummy blue!!!!! :toast: Great shot man!

The only thing I might think to do is turn blue down just a hair in PS color mode.

Great shot Joe, I think the second version really shines. the third version is giving up too much contrast.....just a little washed out. :toast:

Thanks Bruce, I agree. Second one gets it right I think. The third version is almost the same, but with -5 removed from the blue channel.

The first repost looks the best to me, Joe. Very moody shot, fix the halo and it's a real winner.

The first repost works well, Joseph. With images that have a strong blue lit by the sky, you'll have a mixture of blue and cyan. Create a Hue/Sat layer, set it's blending mode to 'Saturation' and then reduce both the blue and cyan to keep the contrast from going haywire.

Nice composition and mood.

I like the first post best. The use of strong shapes makes the composition a winner. I could do with a bit less saturation.

Here you go Kah Kit. Full comp without crop, and slightly less saturation.
