Catching a Nap

Hi Everyone! This is one of my favourite images from the past few months, not in small part because of the experience I shared with my family during which this was created.

After several years of keeping careful tabs on this vixen, her mate (one of the best-looking male red foxes I've seen), and their new families each spring, we have slowly won this beautiful girl's trust.

This year, she and her mate decided to den in a much more accessible location, and one that FINALLY provided decent camera angles. While we had managed some decent pictures earlier in June, it all came together this day, which just so happened to be Father's Day.

So here I was laying in the grass on a small knoll below the Canadian Rockies, with my photographer-daughter (Jenaya) and photographer-in-the-making son (Josiah) on either side of me, on Father's Day, when this vixen returns to the den with a meal, and promptly trots almost straight to us and goes a little ways past and sits down for some much-needed and much-deserved rest. I believe Jenaya shared in her post of this foxy lady that the mom clearly began using us as a shield from the incessant demands of her kits. While we did not interfere in any way, I can't say we didn't take advantage of the incredible photo opps she gave us, and I'm sure you may get a bit tired of fox pictures from the three of us before too long.

While I have dozens of captures showing her beautiful eyes, this one really connects for me, as it's always a pleasure when a wild animal is comfortable enough in your presence to rest, even if for only a moment or two before her kits demanded her attention again.

I hope you enjoy this even a fraction as much as I treasure the memory of a breezy Father's Day spent with my kids enjoying and connecting with God's creation in our favourite corner of the world.

Thanks for looking...

Field Notes:
Nikon D600
Nikkor AF-S 500mm f/4 IF-ED
ISO 640
1/1250sec @ f/5
tripod mounted

Processing Notes:
Converted from RAW using Phase One Capture One Pro 7 with minor adjustments to colour temperature, levels and curves
Very light adjustments to tone and contrast using Nik Color Efex Pro 4 and Viveza 2
Cloned out blue sky from URC to elimate distraction and selectively sharpened in PS5
100% full frame
**sadly lost some of the beautiful blues from the background mountain forest when converted to sRGB, but I felt it accurate enough to post

This is exceptional - doesn't get any better than this. Perfect pose, tack-sharp, great BG.

Family, cooperative wildlife, a beautiful day and the Canadian Rockies. You're right John. It doesn't get any better than that. Wonderful image. Not even close to being tired of the Red Fox images. Keep em coming.

John, normally I would be asking/wishing for eyes...but here you have a terrific expression. What a great reminder of a priceless day with your young photographers. The low, low point of view and the nice bands of OOF color in the background make this one top shelf. Excellent work. :toast:

Hey John,

While the memory associated with this shot may elevate it in significance with you, no one would argue it isn't a solid image! Nicely done. Great expression on a very attractive subject.

I'm surprised you lost some of the blues in the conversion to sRGB - pretty rare that colours won't re-map from one space to another with no obvious visual change in appearance as seen on a monitor. You're converting (not re-assigning) - right? Perceptual intent?

Cheers...

Brad

While many photographers would discard an image with the animal's eyes closed, I'm glad to see your display of this beautiful image of a fox catnapping (certainly not a cat fox-napping). Thanks for the lovely image. Ron

Thanks for all the very kind comments, everyone! I'm so pleased you like this despite the lack of eye contact. For me, the story it conveys and the expression itself more than makes up for it, but as photographers we often get a little attached to an image for more reasons than subjective quality, and it's always nice when what appeals to the photographer also appeals to others. So thank you again! Many more foxes coming from Josiah, Jenaya and myself as we were welcomed around the den sites of not just one but two fox families this spring. It's hard to point the lens at away from those adorable kits, but I have a thing for adult foxes so managed to often enough to create some portraits I'm happy with.

Hello John

Enjoy the story and the feelings associated with a Great Memory ! Our kids grow up very quickly and great to share a like minded memory !

I enjoy these characters and their intelligence to their ability to provide for the brood. Good detail and an excellent mood setting capture!

Thanks for the sharing !

Thank you! for the masterpiece of wildlife photography; for the inspiration in how you patiently gained the vixen's trust over time; for the story behind this photo-- Father's Day, with your own children. All seen and told, it struck an emotional chord with me.
