Morgan's 1st Swim

My wife wanted some pictures of Morgan, one of our Newfoundlands swimming for the first time. Up until this time, he preferred dabbling around in the shallows. Now he is hooked and like any of our other Newfies, he will rarely have dry fur. Bad light, black dog, light background, heavy contrast were the issues. I'm looking for suggestions to improve this image, even after I tweaked it quite a bit in LR and CS5. K5 IIs, 300mm DA* f4 (1/640 sec at f9.0, ISO 500). LR: Shadows +33, Blacks *48, WB tint +43. CS5: Topaz Detail, Color balance, High Pass sharpening with soft light........Thank you for your help and comments :wavey: .......Jim

Jim,
Nice head on shot of Morgan and a sweet reflection to remember this special moment. The colors are good for this lighting with great detail in the larger version as well as seeing those dark eyes. Morgan does need some CW rotation to level.
I would also consider a square crop to eliminate some of the water off the bottom.
I'm a fan of dog shots . . . :toast:

Here is the image after the edits Mike suggested: 3 deg CW rotation, square crop by removing material from bottom. It looks pretty good.................Jim

What a fun shot, and a great memory captured to boot! I do like the reposted image better as the crop seems to simplify it somewhat. Great details in the fur. I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions for the lighting issue, but it looks pretty good to me.
