Bushman Etchings
by SandyRichardsBrown
The Namib desert is the oldest desert on the planet. The sand dunes here are the highest in the world - some 300 metres tall.
Bushmen have lived here for at least 10,000 years. They left a large number of exquisite etchings in the rocks and caves where they lived and hunted. These have been preserved well by the lack of rainfall and
protection from the sun.
The etchings here are from the Twyfelfontaine area of Namibia, and depict the common animals hunted for food and skins - ostrich, giraffe, elephant, zebra, oryx, and others. Other etchings were used as signs to waterholes, game herds, and villages.
There are still villages of bushmen throughout the Kalahari and Namib -
