Wise Old Owl

Hi Everyone! This is a Great Grey Owl I photographed in June with my dad and sister. It's the first time I've gotten to be close enough to get a portrait! Right after I took this the owl flew into the grass but it didn't look like he caught anything.

I really like how the owl is looking back over its shoulder and the way the feathers on his face and neck look. I never thought of trying it in black and white but my dad thought it would look good and I really like it this way. I hope you do, too!

Nikon D7100
Nikkor AF-S 300mm f/4 IF-ED with TC-14EII
ISO 3200
1/800sec @ f/5.6
on noodle from truck window

Dad's Processing Notes:
Converted from RAW using Phase One Capture One Pro 7
Minor adjustments to tone and contrast, then converted to B&W using Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 in PS5
Noise reduction using Nik Dfine 2.0
Cropped to vertical from horizontal original resulting in app 35% original file size

Josiah:
This is a very nice pensive portrait. I like the look the owl provided and that you were able to capture. I think the Black and White works well, but I'd have your dad take a look at adding a bit more contrast with stronger blacks. I think it would make the image even more powerful. Nicely done! :toast:

Josiah, the image is awesome! Tell your dad two people thought it needed more contrast (more black, mostly). :toast:

Hey Josiah,

A very cool image and apparently you were wiser than the owl in order to snag this gem. The comp is nice and the BW processing has sufficient range in tones for the captured detail. The eye is sharp and detailed................................Jim

A sweet one, Josiah and the B&W treatment seems suitable for this bird, though I'd love to see a color version as well. You got superb detail in the plumage on this. Well done.

I really like the comp choice on this one Josiah and great idea for a B&W conversion. I think adding a touch more contrast would given this a bit more punch.
