Breaking Free -- A Birth

I took a long break from NPN and nature photography, but I did manage to do a little macro shooting from time to time. I missed the spring ephemeral wildflowers this year, but while looking too early for some of my favorite species on a dark day deep in the forest shade, I found some nice light to capture this emerging cinnamon fern as it slowly breaks free from its tight coil.

Canon 5D Mark III; Sigma 150mm. Macro
1.3 sec. @ f/11; ISO 320

This is great, Wayne. The details in the frond are terrific, especially the leaves just starting to emerge.

Incredible detail in that coil. I've seen this stage during my hiking but never have been able to capture it like this. Well lit and the background a good choice. Is it a natural background or did you create it? Definitely highlights the fern.

Thanks Guys.

@Harry: "Is it a natural background or did you create it? Definitely highlights the fern." This one is all natural, Harry. However, I did sort of create it, because I pushed over a light-colored dead branch that was a behind it to get a totally blurred dark background.

Liked the natural layered arrangement, folds in the fern leaves.
This is a beautiful image. I feel its a bit over-sharpened.

Just fabulous detail, Wayne, the fern set on the perfect background in excellent light. A great moment to have got this image, as the fern opens up - have never seen one quite like this ( though have seen some remarkable ferns in New Zealand )
