Purple-bibbed Whitetips

Here's 2 Purple-bibbed Whitetips from Ecuador engaged in a battle over feeding rights. The female is on the bottom and as you can see has a nice grip on the male's beak. This was taken in Mindo, Ecuador at Sachatamia Lodge. I cropped it tight to emphasize the action, also there was another hummingbird on top of the flower that I cropped out otherwise I would have included the top of that flower.

Canon 7D 300F4 1/200 F22, iso 320, 580ex and 6 Nikon SB-26 slave flashes, artificial background. Sugar water added to the flower which was held by a plamp.

The last time I was in Ecuador, Glenn Bartley was teaching a class in hummingbird portraiture using these techniques. As your photo shows, you can get some marvelous images, but it just doesn't feel right to me. It seems to me like studio photography, not nature photography.

Not a criticism of you, Nate. You disclosed exactly what you had done. Just a personal preference.

great action, Nate. I understand Jim's feelings, and have waffled back and forth in my feelings. It still takes talent to set up the lights and capture the scene.

Nice action Nate...I have never done this type of work with hummers, but I have no problems with a set up for this type of work. It takes a lot of talent also and isn't as easy as others might think. It is just a different way of capturing something....usually an image which was already in your head. The animals still have to show up and cooperate. Nice work!

Awesome is often overused as a description, but not in this case. Perhaps another title to consider might be En Garde! Richard

Good to reveal the techs etc and interesting to read the comments and attitudes. We all have differing views anyway. My initial reaction was that the red flower was over powering !
