Blue and Gold

Bigleaf maple trees are the main source of fall color in western Oregon forests. I found this leaf lying at the edge of the Alsea River after photographing Alsea Falls in the Coast Range mountains. Water gently washing over rock reflected the sky above and surrounding trees.

Nikon D600, 70-200mm lens @ 135mm, f/18, polarizing filter, tripod, remote release.

Very cool, Greg. Classic combo of colors.... there would be a ton of "molten gold" abstracts to be found in that water. I also like the baby leaf on the bottom edge that is being absorbed by the water. :toast:

Thanks, Dave. One of the things I personally like about this photo is the contrast between the defined, recognizable shape of the leaf and the similarly colored abstract blobs of color - which were changing constantly as the water flowed over the rock. Mesmerizing to watch. (I wish now I'd thought to shoot video as well).

And thanks for noticing the detail of the "ghost leaf".

This is beautiful, Greg. The blue and gold reflections in the water are the perfect addition to this leaf. It's also good that you've got front to back sharpness here. One of my favorite activities in the fall is shooting reflections in moving water (e.g. a recent post in landscape) and your experience with the constantly changing view is partly why.

Gorgeous colour, Greg, and a lovely composition with perfect placement of the leaf. The combination of water, rock and leaf textures is stunning !

Thank you Albert and Ian. I appreciate the comments on the composition. It took me a while to dial in on this one. With subject matter like his, moving the camera even an inch or two up or down, left or right can make a big difference, as can distance + focal length.

I really like the ripples and reflected gold light on the blue. Great details and colors. Beautiful as is, no suggestions.

Thanks, Angela. Blue and gold is a great color combo - just like in your sunflower and blue sky avatar.
