Haboob at Sunset

Hi all,

This image is from early July this year, during the first monsoon activity of the season. There was blowing dust predicted in the evening, so I decided to scramble to the ridge along South Mountain (a few miles from my home) to try my luck at an image. After almost giving up toward the end of the evening when nothing came my way, this monster haboob appeared in the SE horizon and started moving my direction. Before I knew it, it was right smack in front of me at sunset. I managed to fire off maybe 3 exposures before packing up and scrambling down the mountain in the midst of the dust storm. Fortunately, my camera gear survived the dust. Exciting evening!

It took me a while to realize that the red rocks down below were actually roof tops. I'm not sure that I would want to experience one of these.

Outstanding Joel. Congrats on the weekly pick. My son lives in Goodyear, and has sent iphone images of haboobs, but this is spectacular.

Holy cow!! I agree with Carey's comment about this looking apocalyptic. Glad you got there, had this tremendous light, persisted, and got out safely. I've heard of this but never seen it. Brave to hold your spot as long as you did. Congrats on a great shot and a fine Pick! :toast:

What a great capture in time Joel!

That wall of dust is awesome, and I'm glad you and your equipment came out okay.

Just an awesome capture again!!
