Woodland Pond

This pond is at the North Tract, Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge that's about 10 miles from my house in MD. Because it's on the coastal plain with different major tree species, the fall colors here are often better than those around my house and to the north, which is above the fall line in the Piedmont, plus they tend to show a bit later. In this case because of other commitments, I missed out on the best local colors, but this pond still looked pretty good late in the season (2 weeks ago). (5D3, 70-200 f2.8 @ 75mm, 1/20s, f/8, iso 200, tripod and polarizer)

Lovely Fall scene Mark,
Water always adds so much interest to this type of image and you took full advantage.
Well done . . . :toast:

I've come back to this image a few times. I know I really like it a lot. I have had a hard time figuring out what it is that draws me to it. I have a photo on my wall from an unknown to me photographer that has a similar quality to it. (It may be signed inside, but it was very well framed with a paper backing and I hate to take it apart.) The leaves have such subtle and beautiful changes. The colors of the leaves aren't saturated to the edge of belief. This is so real I feel there. That is what draws me to this image and the one on my wall (which is a very different misty scene).

Very pleasing composition, Mark with some wonderful colour harmonies and textures in the trees. Beautifully processed - interesting, too, how the greys are so important to this image.

Jeff, I especially appreciate your comment because one of my goals in photography has always been to share the experience of "being there". Related to that, what I find is that I do my best work when I have spent enough time at a location so that I can stop logically focusing on the photography and start immersing myself emotionally in the sights and sounds. That's when my best images start to happen.

I love the variety of colors in these leaves, Mark. I also like the still pond and reflections of those colors. The large version is particularly nice as it puts you inside the scene rather than looking through a window.
