Sticks on Stone

This is another composition from the same general area as my last post. The long piece is an exposed root of a small shrub that was growing out of a small break in the rock which is just out of the frame on the bottom. The assortment of small sticks and other material had collected where the root started to extend away from the break in the rock. It took me about fifteen minutes I'd say to set up the tripod for this shot to get the exact framing I wanted. It was on a moderate slope in a bit of an awkward location and I needed the camera to be more or less directly over the scene.

Canon 5D II
Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II

I like the texture and colors. I also like the contrast between the root and the rock, also the way the line of the root leads the eye into the image.

The thumb has me thinking crack in the universe, Jim. The contrast between the stone with its warm colors and fine lines and the starkly detailed sticks is great. Well seen.

Nice shot Jim, very creative and unique, something most photographers would have walked right by. I also love the comp and your inclusion of the stick pile at the bottom.

As an arborist it makes me wonder how the shrub ever grew a root this long in so obviously inhospitable an environment.

Cool shot.
