Lady Bison

Though not as "sexy" as baby grizzly cubs or exotic as African carnivores, I found this particular lady bison interesting for the setting of red-orange grasses (bluestem) accented against the shaded distant hills. The single digit Fahrenheit temps and an earlier sprinkle of snow added texture to her coat.

This is taken from the window of my vehicle in Wind Cave National Park. I am experimenting with the new Tamron 150-600 lens and this is at the short end 150. It may not yield as high percentage of keepers as a bigger Nikon, but in good circumstances I've had crisp results even on the longer end. I am really liking the ease of carrying a smaller tele and it makes this one a keeper, in my book.

D610, iso 1250, f8, 1/640, almost full frame, eliminated a very slight intrusion on edge and leveled, processed Capture NX2

It's always nice to get a good, frosty bison, Lon. I agree with you about the grass. It's what first stood out to me, and I think the orange tones provide a nice contrast to the blue background.

The larger version needs to be seen to fully appreciate this nice shot. I like the grass colors and the snow on the bison. I might be tempted to crop out the sky to get an even more intimate shot of the bison.

I agree that this is definitely a keeper, the detail and definition on her face are excellent. I would perhaps brighten her body just a bit, the way it looks on my monitor she stands out too much from the light grasses. A beautiful expression of curiosity on her face!

Lon: really like the contrast of the dark mass of the bison against the lighter toned grasses. Viewing the larger version reveals her eyes which appear to be glued on you. The raised foreleg takes the photo out of the static variety. Congrats, Richard

Really like the head turn, the grasses blowing in the wind and of course the frosty coat. Frosty Bison are always nice! I selectively dodge the shadows a bit more on the lower part of the bison. Nice work Lon! :toast:

What's not to love with this image, such beautiful colors and textures. I've never heard of that particular national park, guess i'll check it out.

Thomas, Wind Cave National Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota is one of the nation's oldest parks. It is a nice mix of native prairie, foothills and Pondorosa pine forest. It's a small park, but a real gem with relatively light visitation and offers the freedom of unrestricted hiking and exploring with a good population of native wildlife.

Really nice one Lon! I love the comp and the snow on the Bison's back. Wind Cave is a nice little gem of a park and greatly under appreciated. Glad you are having good results with the new Tamron; I just picked up one myself and need get it out in the field.
