Reflections of + Flipped

This is a picture I made in Upper MI on a small lake in October. The fall color was beautiful and I really enjoyed these reflections. I guess I usually think about calm water for these type of images but I really like the look created by the fine ripples in the water combined with the reflections here. The light also worked out nice for me and it was a hard place to leave. Thanks too for all of your comments on my last post! Larger version included for best look.

Wow, I always love your vision of the natural world. I agree that the ripples make a more interesting reflection. A slower shutter speed could have given this a "more painterly look" as well.

The white branches in the lower center right break the pattern. Don't know if I like that or not. They sort of break the up-down rhythm of the trunks. I would work on removing that white arc from that tree because it conflicts with the rest of the composition.

But that's just a minor enhancement. It looks great the way it is.

Beautiful composition and colors, Nick! I think that your choice of completely omitting the original trees in favor of their reflections is the right one. :toast:

I like the composition a lot Nick. I agree if you tone down the rhs tree it will sing.

Beautiful painterly image! Great color and nicely abstract. Agree with the suggestions on toning down the right trees, but very minor stuff. Beautiful.

Sweet reflection shoot. Great colors and the white trunks of the trees set things off nicely.

Congratulations, Nick - you are the lucky recipient of my 2,000th comment on NPN!! :wavey:

This image is definitely a worthy way to celebrate that milestone. I like the color in the image as well as the rhythm from the vertical tree trunks. Very nice work, Nick!!

Great inverted study from the reflection of trees and autumn colour. Love the barcode of birch or aspen interspersed with the flaming reds.

Thanks much to all of you for your comments and suggestions on this. I do like it as is but will try toning down the two birch's on the right edge and see how it looks. The fall reflection images one can make in Upper MI are almost unlimited on the right days.
Brian, Thanks! Congrats on your 2000th comment! You have an amazing comment to post record. Cheers, Nick

Lovely scene, Nick! I like how the white trunks contrast so well with the darker tones in the top of the frame, and then explode into a burst of rich color at the bottom. And the rippled water added a nice watercolor effect that is very artistic. I like this as-is. :toast:

Wonderful color and patterns, Nick! I love it as is, but am always intrigued at how things look when you turn this type of reflection image upside down. I'm sure some feel like that would just be "wrong" but I've seen it work well with some images. This one's already a winner though. :toast:

Thanks Bill and Jared!
Jared, I did just that before posting this to see how it looked. I thought it looked good when I flipped it and had a hard time deciding which I liked better. I was thinking about printing it and wanted to see how it looked that way. This is the original view but it was interesting seeing it the other way too. Cheers, and thanks! Nick

Real nice, Nick. The patterns and repeating lines, along with the color,, are excellent. I agree with the suggestion to bring down the tones in those trees on the right.

This is really nice, Nick. I agree with toning down the right trees slightly, but this is super the way you posted it. I'll bet a large print looks awesome. :toast:

It's a beautiful semi-abstract, Nick. There's enough reality so make clear what I'm looking at, but enough distortion from the ripples to emphasize the abstract nature. I'm sure you know that I'm a fan of images like this and this one has lots of drama, color, and beauty...has me trying to stand on my head to see how it would "feel" upside down.

the ripples do add interest. I would be further interested to see a longer exposure (assuming your 7D goes to ISO 50 &/or using an ND filter) - the effect may have been interesting?

Wonderful view of the blazing leaves, and the paper birch bark makes for an irresistible combination. I shoot a lot of these, and I am a big fan of the gentle ripples, too; they give the scene an abstract look that makes it a lot of fun to view both as shot and upside-down.

I'm really liking this lively image Nick. I prefer the original version and I like the brightness and wouldn't tone any of them down, if anything maybe bring the others up to equal the one on the right, after all it doesn't appear to be blown out so why not? I agree the ripples really add to it's appeal.
