The small purple fringed orchid is another rarely seen orchid that is worth seeing during one's lifetime. This particular plant was found in a southern shrub carr plant community. Two coeds were studying a population of eastern massasauga rattlesnakes in the area. They had installed several with radio transmitters and were following them around with their tracking equipment. One of the snakes was about 2 meters from where I was shooting, but the vegetation was so dense that I could not see the snake  *ist D, 180mm f3.5 (1/20 sec at f11, ISO 200) Levels, Topaz Detail, slight crop for composition) ...................Jim

Color and definition are stunning! My only comment is that the bottom appears to be cut off "too suddenly" - but I realize that it is a tall inflorescence, so what can you do?

Lovely capture, Jim - the light being perfect for bringing out the detail in all the blooms. The background is nicely varied in tone and offsets the flower colours very well..

I like the way the light is shining on the orchid and the pleasing background. Good detail. 1/20 of a second??? I guess your camera isn't part wind generator like mine is. Whenever I'm in the wild taking flower shots the wind invariably will pick up. :toast:

Great comp and detail love the structure in these little blooms, they are so cool and was blown away the first time I captured some in the Smoky Mountains. Wonderful work Jim.

Amazing! If the chosen framing was done in-camera, nice choice. In fact, nice choice either way. Lovely dof to compliment the flowers.
I dunno if I could've stayed even to capture such a beauty as this if within 12 ft of a Rattlesnake. Compliments for your nerves of steel!
