SHIFTING PRIORITIES: When I was out freezing in single-digit temperatures this afternoon, the big paper birch attracted me to this part of the woods. Then I noticed the bark damage, but the diagonal set of deer tracks between these two trees kept me there. As I was looking for angles and setting up my tripod, the Sun became a necessary element in the scene, and that made the radiating shadows a more important element, too (perfect for this WC). Tree; tracks, sun, shadows.

Please look at the larger image.

Canon 5D3; Canon 24-105mm.
1/30 sec. @ f/16; ISO 640

P.S. ANOTHER PRIORITY SHIFT: After the shot, I had to change priorities again. As I was collapsing my Gitzo, one of the plastic levers that lock the legs broke off! (Probably temperature-related.) Tonight I was relieved to find that that the parts are available for about $25. Now I just hope my backup tripod survives until the parts come.

Yes, the larger image shows this well Wayne! I like that little iridescent spot just above the damaged bark, but the radiating lines accentuated by the starburst-sun really make this scene.

Good luck with the tripod repairs!

Your comp is very effect Wayne. Wonderful long shadows and sunstar. The deer tracks add more interest to the scene and story of the forest.

Beautiful scene, Wayne. The low angled sun sure shows off all of the texture in the snow. That birch trunk is a good addition and, of course, the sunburst. This image speaks well of what I see as the joys of winter...snow, quiet, and low sun/long shadows. Best wishes with your tripod repair.

Good seeing, Wayne! There are many untold and ephemeral stories in the woods. It is a marvel to me how many people look and how few see. Speaking of, what caused the damage to the birch? Deer browsing on the inner bark?

Yep, that's winter. Nicely seen, Wayne. I tried various browser crops but as presented seems to work best.
