Grasshopper Whiskers

This is a portrait of a Carolina locust who was kind enough to sit for me on a cool summer morning. That allowed me to shoot six images for stacking. While the long exposures and stacks worked for portraits, my grasshopper friends had too much abdominal and foot movement for full-body poses. For this portrait, I shot more images for increased depth of field, but I only got to use 6 of them, due to subject movement.

In the low light, I had to use ISO 1250 to avoid subject movement, but the 5D3 does not have much noise at that setting.

Hi Wayne,

The details are quite good, especially the compound eye. I have no nits because I no how challenging these 'hoppers can be during bouts with the camera and this is an excellent portrait. The 6 image stack added just enough depth of field to make the final image a success :toast: ......................Jim

Wow, that's an impressive close up, Wayne, with terrific detail right down to the facial follicles. Excellent work on stacking the subject for increased dof. Looks great. :toast:

Truly amazing details here, Wayne, and a terrific YUCH! factor. Having the antennae and leg pointing forward all sharp is great as that removes what is often a major distraction in a small insect macro.
