Caracara Portrait

Canon 1D-X, 300mm x 2.0TC, handheld from boat
f7.8, 1/500, ISO1000

Southern Crested Caracra. At 8 feet, the depth of field at f7.8 seemed to be about 1.5 inches. But I thought the shot had enough punch to share.

Cropped to vertical. Selective sharpening to bird.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

The soft light and colors are really wonderful. I think it's a lovely portrait.

DoF is a bit of an issue when viewed large, as the back of the eye is getting a bit soft, but I think you got enough to make it work. Not sure the empty space at top and right does a lot for me, but I understand the choice given the slight turn of the head.

Jim
I'd say this was a fabulous feat of yours. HH and from a boat too! Excellent.

Beautiful light you captured for this engaging portrait Jm. Personally, I like the how the shallow depth of field focuses my attention to the eye. Very nice background too.

Sweet Close-up!

Nice portrait Jim. Enough detail on the eye to make this work well IMO.

Super portrait!. Slightly more DOF would work, but an awesome image as presented. Dave

Nice tight portrait of this guy. Nice detail. I like the slightly mysterious light with the heavy shadowed side of the bird.

Although the back of the head is OOF, the face is wonderful....such great detail. I can see every hair on his face and can even see the stickiness his tongue :toast:
But, I think the sweetest spot is the shadow of his eyelashes in the catchlight of his eye!
