Colorado Coyote

I shot this coyote on the north ridge of the Black Gunnison National Park August 2014. He ran from me when I jumped from the RV and disappeared in a drainage pipe. I grabbed my 5DIII with my 70-200 F2.8 lens with a 2X III TC and stood quietly waiting for him to emerge. When he decided to make his escape about 2 minutes later, I started shooting. The noise from my camera caught his attention, and I was able to capture this eye-to-eye shot.

Would appreciate any comments you may have, particularly to editing.
Thanks for looking. :wavey:

You really caught that intense stare. The exposure and sharpness look good. I would crop some off the right side and make it a more personal portrait. I don't think the space on the right adds anything. Well done.

Good portrait of this coyote. Nice color and details in face. I also think you can tighten the composition. Thanks for sharing.

As suggested, I've cropped the image. I do like it better. Thanks

I agree - the second crop works better - beautiful portrait of a beautiful animal! :toast:

Dottie,
This is excellent, wonderful detail and a perfect look back.
The crop suggestion has worked very well.
What camera did you use?

Hello Dottie

Well done, to be persistent and patient, was worth the experience. Super sharp with excellent surroundings .

Hi Dottie,

Well...to complicate things further...if I'm being honest I prefer the original post and crop over the more tightly cropped version. The reason is that to me it felt better balanced and I felt the extra grass (most of which was nicely in focus) gave it a better sense of place (if you will, more of a "enviroscape"). To me the crop feels like like it's been reduced to just a shot "of a" coyote (a documentary shot) rather than a coyote in an interesting setting. Hope this makes sense.

But...nice eye contact on both versions, and I really like the overall colour scheme...

Cheers...

Brad
