Little owl Dust bathing
Raked this one out for a request for the local trust magazine.
Not a pristine pixel job by any means but one of those things that you see once in a lifetime and manage to get some sort of shot if you are lucky. I feel that something different is worth just as much –if not more. I have worked on little owls for something like 50 years at least and only ever seen it once
OK -its not in water but still bathing I suppose !
This happened on the dry track running under the big open fronted nesting barn. I was set up on the usual “man made natural” perches around the farm yard and was facing the wrong way. Had to de- tripod and stick the lens through a side hole in the hide canvas, made with a struggle with a sharp stone!. Shows how confiding the birds had become. Two Stock Doves walked up to the bird whilst it was going on! Very funny to watch. As I say lacking in IQ but for interest, I suppose more than anything. Over the past four or five years at this nest site the main failure is predation of chicks out the nest by magpies. Or should I say “gangs” of magpies.
Some white splodges removed off stones.

Nikon D7100
Nikor 70-300 f8
Lost the exif but speed on 800 ISO and a big crop.
Put some water down but not seen to use it yet but I understand they do water bathe. I know tawny owls do – photographed it once
Thanks for interest in last pic.
Cheers

John, I like the sharp owl's face, the display of motion hinted at by the feathers and dust clouds. My one and only complaint is the log in the background, a distraction for me. This is well overcome by a story and interest well told.

Cool action John, I like it better with the log out. To my eye it could be brightened a bit. :toast:
