Rare Snowfall
by Thomas Haney
The birds here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia don't often have to deal with finding food after 8 inch snowfalls, but lately they're getting some good practice. I took a walk in the woods the other morning after heavy snowfall overnight, and found some Chipping Sparrows eating seeds off of the few blades of grass still sticking up through the snow. For a more intimate perspective, I laid flat on the ground in the snow and spent a good while trying to freeze the action without much help from my subjects. I haven't done much Avian photography in the past and it's usually more strenuous and requires more patience than I expect, but I had a great time spending the morning with these interesting little birds.
