Sundown at Toroweap

After almost a week at Death Valley with mostly bluebird skies, I was pretty exhausted and thinking about calling it good and heading home. However, I had considered a last stop at the Toroweap Overlook (GC North Rim) since I'd never been there before. I'm so glad I decided to go out there. I'm happy with this image I came away with, but the whole visit just rejuvenated me. So many things to enjoy: the fun 4x4 road out to the overlook, the breathtaking view, the peaceful solitude, the gorgeous campground (completely empty except for me). One of my favorite all-around places I've been to so far. I suspect the experience would have been different during the more crowded seasons of the year, but still a very cool place and I'll be going back sometime for sure.

It ended up being 7 exposures that went into this image: 3 for DR in the sky, and 4 focus blended for the foreground and mid ground. Among the challenges were strong gusty winds, so in addition to trying hard not to fall 3000 feet to my death I was trying to capture the small foreground tree without motion blur from the wind. I ended up using ISO 1600 for just the tree, and longer (ISO 100) exposures for the rest of the terrain. I hope the effort was worth it. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions for improvement.

excellent and convincing work, and clap hands from me.
To be exaggered and to find anyway somenthing to criticize....maybe that the foreground tree has a clue of digital artifact in the detail extraction.
All the best,
Sandro

Your processing abilities are moving along at lightning speed, Jared. I wish I could say the same for mine. Nice take on Toroweap and way to overcome the limitations that we mere mortals must face. I like the comp and I also understand the shear vertical considerations and the fun 4x4 ride to get there.

Beautiful shot Jared, I agree with Gary that your post-processing abilities improve with every post. Wonderful depth and color to this image. Great job.

I'd say the effort paid off. Among the one small details that I find particularly appealing are the narrow sliver of sunlight on the left canyon wall and the reflections on the river.

Not too shabby :) Some tweaks a bit for the comp to get the lines to better hit the corners. Great job with the blend and light :)

Look forward to getting out there one day!

I'd say it was worth it. You've done a great job shooting the individual frames according to what they need, and (at least from here) the blending looks great.

Toroweap's a great spot and you've done it justice.

Great artistic vision in putting this together Jared. Your comp and skill to control the light in this scene is unreal and how you thought the scene out is impressive. Your processing skills have rocketed lately. Just a super image with a surprising lack of comments in my opinion. Stunning job here. :toast:

Such a warm and inviting view, Jared. I love the fact that you used a higher ISO to freeze the tree. Well done!
