The adult Fiery Searcher (AKA Caterpillar Hunter) feeds at night on many soft- bodied larvae, including Cankerworms and Caterpillars.

F/9, 1/200th, ISO 500, 5D M2, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 using a monopod for support in our asparagus patch. Cloudy & No flash around 7:30am.
I left the rear of the beetle dark, OOF anyway..

Hi Howard,

Your beetle photo looks pretty good. For these types of photos, I'd like to see more DOF, but you captured the important part of the beetle, the head and mandibles which are nice and sharp. The background and asparagus perch are nice features that contributes well to the overall composition............................Jim

Cool iridescence in the carapace, Howard....you can't imaging how many years I've been waiting to be able to say that, man,, but I'm not sure I'll eat the Asparagus.

I've missed your magic, Howard. Glad to see you back with your considerable expertise on display. I'm glad these creatures aren't six feet tall

Most excellent, Howard ! Beautifully composed on a nicely graded background, with fine detail in the insect and plant and great control of the highlights; the dark oof rear is fine by me as it adds a touch of contrast to the image.

WOW, what an ugly looking guy. Seems like this guy would make an excellent replacement for the giant ants in "Them".......sad

Seriously, congratulations on this image being picked for the EP / WP here, Howard. Excellent closeup capture......devil
