Oregon's Edge

Since my dog can’t live in our temporary housing, I’ve been trying to take him camping when I can. We headed to Pacific City last weekend. The dog loves to obsess over the rabbits that run loose in Webb County Park, and I enjoy playing around Cape Kiwanda. This was a dawn image from Sunday.

It’s been time to upgrade my computer and monitor for a while now, and I finally pulled the trigger. This is the first photo I’ve played with on the new monitor, so I’d love feedback on shadows/highlights/sharpness/etc. I chose to push the saturation pretty high, maybe too much? (It's slightly more saturated on the new monitor than the old monitor.)

Nikon 50 mm f/1.8
1/60 sec at f/9.5 and ISO 800 blended with 1/6 sec at f/9.5 and ISO 100

John: Everything about this looks fantastic. The subject isn't bad either . Marvelous scene superbly rendered. >=))>

John, this looks truly gorgeous on my monitor. Tonal range and definition are magnificent. Saturation is strong, but I find it acceptable, and it highlights the contrast between the coll water and warmer sky. :toast:

Nice image John. You've captured the feel of the crashing waves very well here, in mid motion. I don't find these colors oversaturated but that's a personal thing. I see images far more flamboyant than this on NPN. I really like this composition but can see another one that eliminates some of the sky and promotes the water/land interaction more strongly. There is a lot of beautiful detail in that water that could get more attention that way.

Hi John, I think the colours are just right with plenty of nice reflections in the midtones on the rocks. Sharpness is ok as well with plenty of good detail in the water - the blend has worked very well here. Perhaps a little dodge / burn to bring up a few of the water highlights and put just a touch of contrast back into the furthest foreground rock formations (but that really is 'nit-picking' ;-) on my part). Composition is also spot on for me - Great image.
Cheers, Mark

You must really hate your dog for "forcing" you to make trips like these! Looks like your monitor is working fine, can't find anything wrong with this. Saturation also looks good to me.

Beautiful view, John!  You've got some great action in the water set off so nicely by that gentle warm sky.  Looks like it might be a touch blue in the water, but the sky looks great.

Stunning image, John, with gorgeous color.  Evokes the power of the surf but at the same time the quietness of the evening with the wonderful color in the sky and reflections, as well as the  distant fog.  Wouldn't change a thing in my opinion.

Very nice.  Wonderfully balanced light, color, and texture.  You got some very nice wave action.

Very nice!  Cape Kawanda is a favorite as my Brother in law has  place down at Neskowin. Great job catching the surf, which can be spectacular here against the cliff.  I am usually quite anoyed by oversaturation, but I think you captured the subtlety of the moment well.

Cheers:   Tom

Hi John,

The magenta and pink hues are really wonderful in this soothing scene. The framing is excellent, and the motion you have captured in the water is really speaks of the nature of this location.  The image manages to display power and calm at the same time, and that is  truly wondeful photography.
