Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center boardwalk in Port Aransas, Texas. This Sora was foraging in the reeds parallel to the boardwalk for quite some time. I was had my 7Dii with the 500mm on it, but I also took my 5Diii with with a 300 and 1.4TC so I was able to frame both habitat shots and frame filling portraits of this bird. It was, however, very intent onit's business, so I got no frames with really good eye contact when the bird was also relatively unobscured.
I don't know if the foreground reeds are too much of a distractionin this image or not.
5Diii, 300mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, hand held, f/5.6, 1/400, iso 1600, aperture priority, pattern metering, no compensation. Processed in LR5 and CS6, cropped to 11.5MP. Taken at 9:01 am on February 24th.
Your comments are very much appreciated.

4 commentsGood job on getting this shy guy -- colors look good on the bird -- not a fan of the oof weeds in foreground
Hi Dennis, this looks like our species of Moor hen. I think you did well to grab this between stems, not always easy.
I would suggest you address some of the highlights in the BKG within LR, the FG brighter stem I might deal with in PS, the more brighter stem appearing from the top I would remove. Again, selectively I might look at the blacks in the head (based on viewing at this size) to reduce any choking of the more 'finer' detail. If you are using LR5.7.1 then you should use PS CC2014 to ensure they dovetail seemlessly, as there are some neat new features that makes things a little easier.

I agree with Steve and Scott, nice job of getting this bird in it's habitat. I would also have worked on minimizing the foreground grass in post as well as darkening the bright areas of the background.
A cool habitat image Dennis with very good detail in the bird. I like the overall composition and I'm not really concerned with the foreground reeds, but I would take a stab at lowering the luminousity of the background stalks just a bit.
