A look at the weather radar showed showers on the north rim and clearing skies to the west, so I made to quick trip to the canyon from Flagstaff in hope of a nice sunset. I am interested in your thoughts on the WB and brightness of the main canyon.

7 commentsDoug: Looks pretty good to me. Nice light and wonderful sky although I would be tempted to crop about 10-15% of it. Might go to the trouble of removing the distortion of the horizon while you're at it. Well done. >=))>
A quick trip from Flagstaff", isn't that a bit of an oxymoron?
Regardless, this is a terrific Canyon image, with fine details in the land and a wonderfully gentle, multi-layered sky. The main canyon looks about right to me with some of the deepest parts getting nearly black. I like the pink/blue combo in the sky, but suspect that you could vary the WB a fair amount and still keep the warm/cool tension that is built into that combination of colors.
The left part of the main canyon could use a bit more brightness I think. White balance looks ok to me, although it could also be a bit warmer maybe. But that's hard to say, especially since the WB is influenced a lot by how we experienced it. The clouds are great, nice job with checking the weather radar!
WB, contrast and brightness all look spot on to me, Doug. Love those clouds. I'm a bit on the fence about the comp with the FG splitting the bottom and right edges nearly exactly in half. It feels like either more or less of the FG rocks might have been worth exploring too but then that would have been a totally different photo. Nice work nevertheless.
Thanks all for the feedback. I did go back and select the canyon to bring up the shadows slightly and warm it just a tiny bit. I thought the darker llc gives the canyon some feeling of depth so kept it reasonable dark. The north rim does drop off in elevation 500-600' from straight across at the head of Bright Angel Canyon to the east towards Cape Royal, and also to the west hence giving the curvature.
A real eye-catcher Doug. This must be seen large to be fully appreciated.
Hi Doug,
This is a glorious view of the North Rim, and it make me want to be there. The image is both peaceful and soothing to the spirit. The technicals look pretty darn good to me, but I like the suggestion in bringing up the shadows ever so slightly. I agree about keeping it dark enough for the depth, but just a tad more could look very nice.
These are some minor nits, but this image is so very enjoyable to enjoy.
