Cascade Falls

This is an image I made at Cascade falls on Orcas Island.  It's a really easy waterfall to get to (assuming you're on the island) and the fallen tree atop adds a lot visually.  I was lucky to have sun streaking through the trees (sun? In the pacific northwest?) and was really lucky to have it hit the outfall of the watefall.

Nikon D7100 12-24mm on gitzo tripod with CPL filter @ 12mm

f/22

ISO 125

3 second exposure

Full Frame, minor adjustments

Beautiful light, tonal greens and nice shutter speed. I like it, especially the spot in the water at the bottom  that brings the eyes to search for details.

Really beautiful with that sun light on the water and the log across the top. I might clone out the stick in the lower left corner, but that is very minor...just a gorgeous scene.

Beautiful. The large version is a must see. Beautiful lush greens. The sunny area at the bottom of the waterfalls works well for me. I would be interested to see what a faster SS would have given. Perhaps more definition in the water like those smaller rivulets. The tree trunk looks great. Maybe some dodging behind it - or not. Very very nice.

very well presented, and good effect. That horizontal big tree helps to frame the waterfall, and also colour and light are IMHO correct and pleasurable.

All the best,

Very pretty scene Luke. My eye does a nice sweep from top left across the log then rolls down the falls, Thanks for the background info, I was wondering if the sunlight at the bottom was manufactured post.

Tough shooting conditions but you handled it well. I love the warm colors and the fresh and lush greens. Very beautiful image.

The kiss of light on the falls works great here.  What is interesting is I would normally avoid the uneven lighting and try to wait for even lighting across the entire scene.  This proves I need to be more open minded.

The tree at the top works very well as a "mimic" to the water movement across the bottom.  A lovely scene.

I think I might crop a bit from the left side. Other than that this is spot on! The light on the waterfall is a great feature. Good job in controlling the DR also.

I'm a sucker for waterfall shots, and this is a great one!

I agree with Roel about cropping from the left a little bit, maybe just to the right of that stick in the lower left corner?

Hi Luke,

This is a sweet little scene, and feels full of life. The lush greens work so well with the smoothly textured water, and the beautiful light shinning down adds something special to the image. The fallen tree keeps me in the frame nicely, and is an ionteresting element in the image.

Beautiful work
