This is an intimate view of my time up in the UP of Michigan. I was admiring the pure rolling hills of the winter snow, and was looking for an element to compliment these pure snow hills. I was wearing snow shows in probably 40 inches of snow, so i imagine this is a top of a tree protruding from the snow. I was very mesmerized by the texture of the snow, and how wonderful it looked untouched. I hope I communicated this feeling to the viewer.
This image actually took quite of bit of processing to get the look I saw in the field. I would very much appreciate any input on this image that you think could help it out. I have submitted it to a gallery showing, and I will know tomorrow if it is selected, along with some other images. I have been perfecting the print of it, but I feel more input would be very helpful, and I would love feed back from y'all. ![]()
Thank you in advance for any time y'all can give me on this image
Canon 70d, f11, 1/50th sec, ISO 100 tripod and release cable procssing with luminosity masks, and I believe a bit of Orton effect

21 commentsRyan, how neat is this small scene !! This is just super. The snow surrounding the tree is really what makes this work so well. Although the tree is the main subject it's the extremely delicate rolling snow mounds that brings the best out in being able to isolate the view of this tree.
All looks exceptionally nice to me and should work well for print usage too. Good luck with the overall print selection process tomorrow......it's already a winner IMO.
I like this one very much as well, Ryan. There is a wonderful luminosity to that show and it's variability. This would have worked for me even without the tree but the tree adds a different dimension. Hopefully the gallery will like it as much as I do. Good job.
Ryan:
The simpler the image the more perfect it must be. It would be great to see the print, one has so much finer control over the final presentation. This worked very well, isolating the feminine curves of the snow in juxtopisition to the stark hardness and color of the evergreen. Colorballance and composition is quite good. I hope the gallery has equally as good taste as the members here!

This is lovely, Ryan - simple yet powerfully evovative. Very well crafted!!!
The texture of the snow mounds and the gentle shading all make this one exceptional image, Ryan. I am sure you've played with bringing out the subtle shadows and the lines of the mounds. I think, as a very subtle improvement, I might play with the upper left and that last small mound. No matter, this is most excellent and good luck with the selection.
Perfect! Composition and contrast are on-target here. Good eye and excellent development.
This is really nice Ryan! The subtle shades and shapes in the snow that are interrupted by that lonely tree sticking out from the snow. For me, this really tells a story about perseverence and survival that is much needed in nature.
Simple, powerfull and extremely well done. I am living in winter country and it is my dream to capture a scene like that. I like it a lot.
I really like the soft curves of the snow mounds Ryan. The helpless tree adds a lot of interest for me.
Excellent! I love the soft lines and the simplicity of it. No suggestions, looks outstanding as is. Good luck with the showing.
Beautiful subtle shadows! Ver nice work Ryan!
Beautiful shot Ryan, and the processing looks dead on perfect perfect to me. The shadows are perfectly placed to show off the sensuous lines in the snow and the splash of green is very nice.
Seriously great day out exploring on unbroken trails. That windy lake was awful, but these snow humps were pure magic.
I like the inclusion of that horizontal curve into the tree at the base. Nice work on the tree as well. That's where I've struggled and left my image in the to be edited as I gain skills.
I think you can improve the blending of the shadows going under the tree from the left at the dead branches and the middle. They feel a bit light under the tree when I look at the continuation of shadows on the right. Could be the full size image is smoother there, though.
Hope the gallery makes the right decision and chooses your work!
Ryan, don't you know it's almost summer...
This pine really stands out well against the snow. The combination of it's lean and the waves of snow make a very artistic view. I wouldn't change a thing.
Beautiful stuff, Ryan, nicely seen and rendered. I was wondering about cropping the two shadows on the top edge but when I do the browser crop on them it doesn't seem to improve the image so it's probably best to maintain your vision for this. Love it.
Ryan, I'm really enjoying this one!! Great composition and wonderful idea to shoot it like this. It is simple and very effective. I like your processing just as is on this. Beautiful work friend!
