I posted another from this series of a Savannah Sparrow singing on a spring prairie in the Avian Gallery a while back, but this one has a better singing pose and I think evokes Spring better. The yellow in the bg is our native buttercup and a lomatium known as spring gold (one of the earliest spring flowers here).
7Dii, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, balanced on vest on car window, f/8, 1/2500, iso 800, aperture priority, partial metering, no compensation. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped to 15.2MP. Taken at 8:15 am on April 27th (spring's a bit earlier in the NW than the NE).

5 commentsDennis, this is a fine look at this sparrow clearly singing like crazy. Excellent catch on his pose and details in his feathers, he's a beauty. The background works very well also, with the matching yellows and spring greens. I had to pull out my calculator to see your equivalent focal length...1120mm. I know from experience how close you have to be to get a bird this size to occupy a good portion of the frame, but I'm still going back and forth about all the negative space. It does create a good sense of an open field but I wonder if a square crop with the bird offset wouldn't convey pretty much the same feeling while letting the bird pull more attention.
Hi Dennis
i love this beautiful sping scene that you wonderfully captured ..... the pose of the sparrow, and the very fine background make this a delightful spring scene.

A wonderful photo Dennis and deservedly of far more attention. Beautifully isolated and in full voice too.

This is just supberb. The bird stads out so much the image looks three dimensional. Great capture.
Dennis: Marvelous BG and I can just hear this little guy greeting the morning. Nicely done.>=))>
