This is an image of Waimea Canyon in Kauai, taken while scouting for my recent photography tour that I co-led with Aaron Feinberg. They call this canyon the "Grand Canyon of the West" and rightfully so. I've never seen anything like it in any of the other Hawaiian islands. It really does feel like something out of the southwestern US! To give you some perspective, that waterfall, Waipo'o Falls, is 800 feet tall!

With the way the clouds were positioned that day, I knew that if I waited long enough, a rainbow would likely appear. After a few hours, I got what I wanted. If you look closely you can even see a tiny trace of rainbow on the falls themselves. Once the rainbow was in just the right place, I tripped the shutter and then proceeded to crack a beer in celebration. Sometimes, it all comes together. =)

Certainly worth the waiting and the beer! This is very nice indeed, especially the rainbow in the waterfalls. My brain is so conditioned on finding new optical phenomena the whole time that it was the first thing I saw.... Nice that you mentioned the size of the waterfalls, I would not have guessed it and the canyon to be this big!

Gorgeous image... love the balance between the waterfall and the rainbow. The window of blue to the sky is great too. Dappled light also very cool. Nicely done

Hi Kory,

This image makes me want to pack my camera gear, and head out to KAUAI TO CAPTURE IMAGES! The depth and layers in this capture work so well in engaging my eye, and the colors tones are delightful. I am really digging this uplifting image!!!

Kory, What a beautiful image this is. Fantastic scene with wonderful light and colors, then the rainbow just adds that special touch. 800 foot falls...wow! Nice work!
