I photographed this little guy during a thunderstorm while he was perched near one of our feeders. This one had some nice color which was enhanced by using the Shadows and Highlights feature iin CS5. I'd like a little more DOF, but it was fairly dark so I shot with a fairly wide aperture. K5 IIs 300mm f4 (1/250 sec at f5.6, ISO 640) Levels, crop for comp.......................Jim

7 commentsExcellent job, Jim. It's very difficult to get the tail in focus in this pose, adn I usually don't worry about it. By the time you're close enough to get the bird reasonably large in the frame, the dof is awfully small at 300mm and up. Nice pose and perch and you managed to get the right angle tokeep the whole perch in focus. Sweet bg as well.
Excellent sharpness/detail and I like the hummers position in the frame Jim.
Great BG and a head turn that shows off that beautiful red gorget nicely
Here's another version of another Rthb. There's about 6 hitting the feeders and this one was finishing up a round of preening. I used TK's Make It Glow to perk up the color. This is also a test for Jim's changes to the NPN website................Jim
Jim,
There is a lot to like in this shot. The bird is tack sharp, the gorget has a nice reflection, the background is not distracting, and the arched branch is lyrical. I like the color of his stomach better in the second photo, but I don't know what the bird really looks like, so the stomach feedback is questionable.
Nice job, with just enough color in the gorget to be interesting without blowing the color. Great background.
Excellent Jim in all respects, the large version is a must see,
Nice clean, sharp image Jim. The colors look great and I really like the curved perch. While I like the locaiton of the comp, I am on the fence about this much negative space. It works either way, but curious what it might look like with a bit more cropped fromt he top and left?
